The History of Reiki

Mikao Usui (1865-1926) is the founder of Reiki. There are variations on the history of Reiki in the East and West, however it is known that Mikao Usui discovered Reiki during his time on Mount Kurama, Japan, in March of 1922.

Later that year he created the organisation Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing Method Society) in Tokyo. His motivation was not to keep Reiki to himself but to share this ability and his knowledge.

Mikao Usui gave Reiki to many patients for countless different ailments and as the success of Reiki increased, clinics began to open in many different regions of Japan.

As his popularity grew, invitations from across Japan were received by Usui and it was during his travels to Fukuyama, Hiroshima in 1926 that he suffered a fatal stroke.

Reiki has been passed down from Mikao Usui through various teachers and lineages internationally. It continues to be practiced, taught and learnt by people across the world today.
